Yup, and then there is Zeus, and many other gods, who, in their day, were revered as much as the Christian god.

    Here's the paradox.

Nothing makes a believer(sic) more uneasy than an intelligent atheist, because they ask them questions which almost force them to reflect upon their own delusion.

But those who believe in a concept of a Christian god, they themselves are 'atheists', they are 'atheists' to these other gods, are they not..?

Alex, can't you see the irony though?

Christians would mock at the idea of anyone believing in the god of Zeus or Apollo, because, of course, their story of a cosmic Jewish Zombie is far more plausible!

Why does it matter what people believe as long as the live their lives being reasonably nice?

A good person is a good person no matter what they believe surely?

Can believing what is essentially a mass delusion ever be a progressive thing, though? For society. I don't think that it can.

Oh aye! I indeed see the irony... I once had a long debate with some christians about my god Sheogorath.... And I agree he could be replaced for Zeus, Thor, Loki, Hades, Jimmy Saville... Whoever.... But, they're still not atheists.. Cause they do have a belife in a supreme being... But yeah I see what you're saying.

Religion is the enemy of reason and rationale.

If you fill people's heads with fairytales, then pass them off as fact, then you are perpetuating a backwards mentality.

    Look at the US.

Definitely among the most religous nations in the world, yet, ironically, out of step with their Jesus, also one of the greediest, and one of the most aggressive.

Don't blame the actions of a few selfish people on the many.

There are billions of good honest people in the world who are religious, and there are a minority that do bad things under the cloak of religion. Religion is not at fault, human fallibility is.

I respect what you are saying.

    However, I disagree.

To me, religion is like crystal meth.

If you leave it alone, never touch it, you won't be adddicted and effected.

But when you take it, that is when the problems start.

    Same goes for religion.

I have yet to even meet a moderate religionist who doesn't eventually become very aggressive/defensive, if you happen to subject them to some critical thinking, and pointed questions.

I have an interest, I refuse to denounce (most) things, unless I know at least a basic grounding in them.

That's fine, you have to do alot worse than that for me to take offence.

YWFT needs to understand that if you attack someone's belief's, then they'll get defensive, religious or atheist.

I do agree, if one stands for something. Passionate about something, loves something.

    And another attacks it.....

One should by instinct defend it.

I don't think you can blame others for that reaction, but respect the fact they are willing to defend it! TO THE DEAF!

    Touch what, mate?

    Religion?

Nope. Never at any time in my life. I think it takes a certain sort of person, psychologically. It takes someone who wants to submit to another (in this case, an invisible entity), and I am not submitting myself to anyone, least of all some magic friend in the sky. geek

I would not last two seconds in any organised religion, Eric.

My mind is too full of questions.

Benign acceptance is welcomed in the Church, not a challening mind, one that might make them feel ill at ease.

Atheist is an absence of belief, not a belief system, as you will know, mate.

Additionally, I speak not of 'attacking', I speak of asking the religionist salient and pertinent questions, this is what makes them uneasy, and when you do not relent, they become autocratic and aggressive.

And here is the irony of all ironies...

Dare question or challenge the theist, and they will wring their hands, in mock hurt.

Yet, at the same time, they, as followers of a relgion, say Christianity, would happily see their 'god' burn you, FOREVER, for the simple act of non compliance.

Isn't that psychological 'terrorism', esp when it is spewed to kids? Eg; Belive this or you will suffer in 'hell' forever.

You do it with the intention of undermining what they believe in, not questioning and listening to their answer. That is why they get defensive.
