Myth Or Fact? Empty Myth Or Fact?

Post  Yeah Well Fine Then Wed Mar 11, 2009 7:25 pm

I remember reading that if for some reason, the world's inverts all died, that within a short space of time, mankind would soon also become extinct.

    Has anyone else read/heard this..?

If so, how valid do you believe it to be, as I cannot recall my source, tbh.

Certinaly, the entire extinction of a whole genus like inverts could only have huge negative effects on the food chain, etc, that part is for certain.

Whether or not this would filter up to humans, to the point that it caused our total demise, I think can be argued.

What do you think, based on your knowledge?

    Thanks

This one went right over my head. I could use some clarification.

    Inverts?

Invertebrates mate, animals that have no spine. Specifically insects.

Actually when it comes to insects. I was thinking the other day about the mass production of crops.
Before pesticides, we could never do this because the insects would eat and destroy the crops. Does this mean the insects were bad? No not at all. To me this seemed to be natures way of saying you're doing it the wrong way. Until pesticides mass production of crops was nearly impossible. So with the using of pesticides came mass production of said crops. Next came more population. Lots more. If there was one thing that kept population in check, it was our food supply. My feeling is nature would be at balance if people were growing small lots of food for themselves, and farmers growing smaller lots that they could easily maintain to provide for people outside of areas where growing food could be difficult. Due to pesticides the balance of nature has been upset.

Well there are more things that have upset the balance of nature, this is just one example.

I remember reading this article some time ago, Eric.

It was written by a professor, although I cannot find the article, at the moment.

In it, he wrote that there are those out there who are experimenting with using some insects and bugs as the next phase in weapons.

Here is how it would work, in theory.

A biological 'weapon' would be created, an then impregnated into a given bug, mosquito's would be a good example.

Using whatever method, these modified mini killers would then be released into the target area, soon causing great illness and death.

It would be v hard to defend against such a thing, however, the prof went on to say that in principle this would not be too difficult a thing to do, and that even a terrorist cell that were committed enough, could develop such a thing.

It sounds like something from a poor sci fi movie, but I personally would not be surprised to see something like this emerge.

But that is the concern, fella.

That the wrong people will develop the ability to almost use nature itself, in our petty and perpetual wars.

The insects thing being one example.

And while it might be some way of, imagine the power a nation would have, were it able to actually control climate, and evoke earthquakes and storms?

We'll never control nature... Although we seem to think we are better than it, and that we defeat/overcome it..... Perfect example, Netherlands... They have the most elite engineers in the wolrd (my opinion lol.) And they are battling and making some amazing features to stop their lands being consumed by the tides of time... But, it's futile... Their lands will be vanquished lol.

    Why?

Explain the effects over that two year period, Daniel, and if you have any vids or links to support this suggestion.

"We'd still have bananas and pinapples as they don't require pollination but we would lose any plants that bees pollinate. knock on effect of this would mean that we wouldn't be able to make clothes out of cotton anymore as there would be none, medicines would be affected (most use plant extracts), animals need feed but there would be nothing to feed them on, so no meat, basically as Einstein once said to the same question, 'without bees there's no pollination, then no plants, without plants theres no meat, without meat there's no man'"

Bono is right... This world would be f..fluffed without bees.. But there are many insects that would screw us up if there were not present.. One no one actually thinks about much is spiders lol... Yet... If you take man out of the picture the world flourishes.... So much for being the supreme specie.... Are we an invading cancer on this realm? We certainly move, act and live as one.

Reference Netherlands matey: You know that it is undersea level right? And every year.. It looses more land lol... Well they are battling constantly to "defeat" the effects of nature(winds/ocean) with many outstanding contraptions, you have your flood gates, barricades, walls, bridges break waters... And even now they have floating houses and roads.... (it's a work in progress) The roads are pretty sweet.. Stable to drive on... Working bridges on the roads too that go up and doon... (like the 'people on the bus').

I forget the name of it, but there is this one bit of kit that works on two arcs... That co-inside with each other and can in a swift amount of time change the direction and block water... But, it is constantly worked on / repaired... And as time passes it isn't anywhere near big enough to stop the ocean swallowing the netherlands.

Not at all, we just happen to suffer from greed. All other animals keep their populations at a constant. Unless you go back in time to the primordial soup, DNA won, which is why it's in everything. It wiped out all of it's competition and only had itself to fight with. Ergo, many different animals specialising in different areas to keep it's DNA alive. (Yes that was rather simplistic, but fuck it)

Cancer: cells[humans] that are not normal grow and spread very fast. [over population] Unlike these normal cells, cancer cells just continue to grow and divide out of control and don't die when they're supposed to.

Cancer cells usually group or clump together to form tumors [cities] A growing tumor becomes a lump of cancer cells that can destroy the normal cells [land, water and air] around the tumor and damage the body's[earth] healthy tissues.

Sometimes cancer cells break away from the original tumor and travel to other areas of the body[earth] / [nations], where they keep growing and can go on to form new tumors[cities]. This is how cancer spreads. The spread of a tumor to a new place in the body is called metastasis[migration/imigration]

    And the cure? Nature Wink

So, knowing this and being lucky enough to be aware of your own existance, what are you doing to help buck this trend?

I meant, are you doing anything to stop the 'human cancer', recycling, giving to preservation charities, joining the woodland trust, etc.?

Yeah cool, it's far too easy to sit back and complain without actually doing anything.

As for the highlighted part, I think you've hit the nail on the head there.

I just fed the ants outside my house whilst I was having a cigarette.

Where are you based 17, if you don't mind my asking.
